The Covenant
Hunters train what the mirror shows. Chest, arms, quads. Meanwhile the chain that keeps your spine upright in every Gate (hamstrings, glutes, spinal erectors) often goes undertrained.
The Romanian deadlift, the RDL, is the covenant you sign with that chain. It is not a conventional deadlift. The bar does not touch the floor. The knees stay soft and bend only a little. The hips do most of the talking.
Protocol: The Hinge
- 1. Start standing, bar in hand, shoulder-width grip, bar against your thighs.
- 2. Set soft knees: a slight bend that stays roughly the same through the set, without locking or squatting.
- 3. Push your hips straight back, as if closing a door behind you with your glutes. The bar slides down your thighs, staying close rather than drifting forward.
- 4. Lower under control until your hamstrings pull tight like a drawn bow while your back stays flat. Range of motion is individual: for some hunters that is around the knee, for others near mid-shin. Depth is earned by control, not ego.
- 5. Drive your hips forward to stand. Squeeze the glutes at the top. Do not lean back.
The Three Sins
- 1. Rounding the back: the bar is a test of your spine's discipline, keep the chest proud and the lats locked.
- 2. Bending the knees to fake depth: that turns the rite into a half squat and the hamstrings learn nothing.
- 3. Loading before earning: if you cannot feel the hamstring stretch with an empty bar, adding plates only rewards the wrong muscles.
Progression Ledger
| Week | Sets x Reps | Load |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 3x10 | Empty bar or light dumbbells, groove the pattern |
| Week 2 | 3x10 | Add load until the last two reps demand focus |
| Week 3 | 4x8 | Same load, tighter rest (2 min) |
| Week 4 | 4x8 | Add a small jump (2.5 to 5 kg is one example) if every rep kept a flat back |
Final Transmission
As an example, many hunters run RDLs once or twice a week after their main lift, stopping a couple of reps short of failure. A hunter's front is for show. The chain behind you is for survival. Sign the covenant.
